New Imaging Agent Spotlights Inflammation
2020/10/07

Many diseases including cancer and COVID-19 are associated with inflammation. To see the site and progress of inflammation by imaging has been long awaited. Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have developed a new tracer, known as Galuminox, which can show the site and intensity of inflammation. It successfully showed lung inflammation in mice, as reported in Redox Biology. Galuminox detects reactive oxygen species, and is labelled by an isotope gallium-68 to be used as a positron emission tomography (PET) tracer for noninvasive imaging. It can be used to monitor a patient's response to anti-inflammatory medication or to track the development of chronic inflammation. It is expected to be used in patients with COVID-19.
