U.S. Medical radiation doses are decreasing

National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) - According to the recently published NCRP Report No. 184 on the medical radiation exposure of patients in the United States (2019), there has been a 15-20% reduction (from 2.92 mSv to 2.16 mSv) in non-therapeutic medical radiation dose to individuals of the U.S. population in the decade between 2006 and 2016. Specifically, the estimated effective dose per person decreased from 0.3 mSv in 2006 to 0.22 mSv in 2016 for radiography and fluoroscopy, from 0.73 mSv to 0.32 mSv in nuclear medicine, and from 1.46 mSv to 1.37 mSv for CT. This Report No. 184 is an update of NCRP Report No. 160, Ionizing Radiation Exposure of the Population of the United States, Section 4 (Medical Exposure of Patients) (2009).
