Current status, the regulations, the challenges and the future outlook for transport of radiation sources

Transport is an activity that connects other activities such as manufacturer to end-user or end-user to disposal facility and without the capability to transport many of the uses of radioactive material would not be possible.  Importantly transport is an activity that purposely places radioactive material in the public domain and as a consequence the transport regulatory requirements, which were first published by the IAEA over 50 years ago and continuously managed and improved over that time, have been developed to protect persons, property and the environment from the harmful effects of radiation.
